Pezhvak Energy has achieved another milestone in the country’s drilling projects by completing two horizontal boreholes at the same True Vertical Depth (TVD) in the Jufair-9 well, within the Ilam reservoir layer. Hossein Jafari, Head of Engineering for the Sepehr-Jufair Project at Pezhvak Energy, announced the completion of horizontal drilling operations for the Jufair-9 well. He stated, “In the Jufair-9 well, the main leg (6 1/8 inches) was drilled horizontally to a length of 1000 meters, reaching a total depth of 4074 meters in the Ilam formation. The second leg (5 7/8 inches) was drilled horizontally from a depth of 3225 meters, extending 500 meters. Drilling two horizontal legs at the same TVD in a 10-meter-thick reservoir layer is a significant achievement.” He added, “The Jufair-9 well is the first new well from the second EPDS package under the Sepehr-Jufair field development plan. Its purpose is to maximize production from the Ilam layer in this field. The well was initially drilled vertically to a depth of 2400 meters, after which deviation began. In the Ilam formation, the well inclination exceeded 70 degrees at a depth of 3073 meters, and casing was set to this depth. The 6 1/8-inch main leg was then drilled horizontally in the Ilam reservoir to a depth of 4074 meters, and the second leg was drilled horizontally from 3225 meters to 3705 meters.” Highlighting the unique features of the Jufair-9 well, Jafari stated, “Challenges during the drilling process included well trajectory control, designing a drill string suitable for the horizontal borehole length, and implementing geosteering techniques. These were jointly managed by Pezhvak Energy's geology and drilling engineering teams, ultimately ensuring the successful completion of the well and positioning both boreholes in the most productive sections of the Ilam reservoir.” Mr. Jafari noted, “Given the low permeability of the Ilam reservoir rock, geosteering techniques were employed to guide the well treajectory through the best zones of the reservoir layer. Geosteering relies on Logging While Drilling (LWD) and Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technologies. The data gathered during drilling was analyzed to optimize the wellpath in the reservoir’s high productive zones.” He further mentioned, “The obtained data confirms that this well was drilled in the reservoir’s section with optimal porosity and permeability. Despite the lack of access to advanced directional drilling tools like RSS and logging equipment, the project team innovatively used standard software to apply geosteering methods and achieve the project’s goals.” Jafari emphasized, “Multilateral drilling operations are among the most complex drilling techniques, rarely performed in the country’s drilling industry. However, based on the evaluations conducted during the Jufair-9 well’s drilling and the lessons learned, this technique can be replicated for similar wells in the Ilam reservoir layer to enhance drilling efficiency." Finally, the Head of Engineering for the Sepehr-Jufair Project at Pezhvak Energy stated, “With the increased contact between the wellbore and the reservoir rock, it is expected that the well’s production will significantly exceed expectations."
